Advice for repairing potholes

Brian PikeEvery year, property owners and managers are faced with repairing those ugly and hazardous potholes in their paved surfaces. There are several options, and just as many opinions, when it comes to properly repairing potholes.

The Federal Highway Administration has stated, “The goal of patching operations should be to place patches that last as long as the surrounding pavement.” How does one determine which repair method is best? According to the FHA, matching the repair methods to the specific factors of the pothole is the key to success. These factors include: hazard liability, timeliness of the repair, size of the pothole, condition of the surrounding pavement, moisture, budget limitations and how long the repair should last.

It was meant to be

Y’know that whole “It was meant to be thing?”  Well, that could have easily been coined specifically for Apex Pavement Solutions.

Co-owners and co-founders Brian Pike and Brian Blythe just seemed destined to head up their own asphalt installation and maintenance company. Their paths up the industry ladder have been remarkably similar, even intersecting for years at a time before arriving back in Golden, Colorado where they call home.

Each has over 25 years experience in road paving and maintenance.  Each began as a municipal “shovel man” rapidly reaching through the ranks of heavy equipment operator, foreman, superintendent, senior manager, and finally, owner.  Each is married, living in Jefferson County and putting children through college.  And each has remained loyal to those local roots where they continue to remain active in the community.

Infrared Patching

Infrared asphalt repair saves APEX Pavement Solution's customers money, time and inconvenience. APEX Pavement repairs hazardous potholes, alligator cracking, failed utility cuts and other surface defects that plague asphalt drives and parking lots – year round. The infrared technique provides superior repairs to parking lots and drives at savings of up to two-thirds the cost of conventional methods. Conventional repair requires saw cutting and removal of the old asphalt from a damaged site and its replacement with new asphalt. New infrared technology expedites repair by heating the repair area, scarifying and adding new asphalt, then compacting the patched area, saving time and material in the process.

In a recent article, Steve Ortega, street operations foreman for Commerce City, CO said “The infrared system saves time and does a better repair then just filling a pothole or alligator cracking with new asphalt.”
